Dvořák. More Czech or American?
Fauré's C minor Quintet is not a reminiscence of past grandeur. Completed in 1921, when the dense, late-Romantic style was gradually giving way to new trends, composed by a creator who was already partially deaf – it remains an outstanding work, full of invention, with a chamber-like nerve, yet with a sound almost symphonic. The success of its premiere led the composer to comment, "Now we should try to do it even better."
Dvořák wrote his F major Quartet during a vacation in the small town of Spillville in the state of Iowa, populated by the Czech diaspora. One of his fixed ideas was to create a unique "American" style, which is why scholars to this day search for traces of African American and Native American folk music in the work that so occupied the composer. The debate over whether the F major Quartet is more Czech or American continues to this day.
