The flagship band for one of the last great revolutionists in jazz. In the 80s, at the forefront of the M-base movement, Steve Coleman blended the sophistication of jazz with the rhythmical straightforwardness of black hip-hop, while echoes of his style can be heard in the playing of most modern alto saxophonists. An erudite studying African cultures, fascinated by the astronomy and mythology of the East, in 2014 he became a MacArthur fellow, awarded what is commonly known as the 'Genius Grant'. Today, the saxophonist has become a true institution, educating subsequent generations of innovative American jazzmen. In its live version, Coleman’s music is raw cumulated energy of unparalleled intensiveness.
