NOSPR in Chamber Mode / Lachner, Krommer & Gounod - NOSPR
NOSPR in Chamber Mode / Lachner, Krommer & Gounod
The Czech composer Franz Krommer was born soon after Handel’s death, and outlived Beethoven by four years. Today, he attracts interest mainly as an author of wind pieces. One of them is the Octet-Partita in E flat major, firmly based in classical aesthetics, yet reaching towards the Romantic future thanks to its singability and original timbre-related ideas. The other two compositions of the evening draw inspiration from the heritage of fully mature Romanticism. Gounod wrote his Petite symphonie nearly three decades after abandoning symphonic attempts to pursue opera and lieder. One does not need to search much to find inspiration drawn from Schubert’s Lieder in Franz Lachner’s Octet. Today, instruments will sing with nearly-human voices: in a lesser-known piece by a French titan and in two best-known works by forgotten creators.
